Overview

Dunellen Public Schools is committed to providing a safe and secure learning environment for our students and staff. The information below provides a brief overview of some of the ways in which we bring that commitment to life to allow our students and staff to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

  • Dunellen Public Schools uses a comprehensive approach that combines physical security measures, clear procedures, professional training, and strong partnerships with families and local agencies. From the design of our buildings to the culture we foster in classrooms, safety is embedded in everything we do.

  • We have invested in modern security infrastructure across all schools. This includes secure entry systems, visitor management protocols, cameras in key areas, and communication systems that allow us to respond quickly in the event of an emergency. Our facilities are regularly assessed by safety professionals and we make improvements based on the latest best practices and state guidelines.

  • Preparation saves lives. Each school maintains a detailed emergency operations plan that covers scenarios such as fire, severe weather, medical emergencies, and security threats. Drills are conducted throughout the year so that students and staff know how to respond calmly and effectively. We coordinate with first responders to ensure alignment between school procedures and community emergency services.

  • Safety depends on people as much as on systems. Our staff receives ongoing training in crisis response, student supervision, first aid, and de-escalation strategies. We encourage a culture of awareness where every staff member, from teachers to custodians, plays a role in recognizing and addressing concerns. Students are also taught age-appropriate lessons about personal safety, digital citizenship, and the importance of reporting issues to trusted adults.

  • True security goes beyond physical measures. We know that students learn best when they feel emotionally safe and supported. Dunellen has invested heavily in counselors, social workers, and school psychologists who provide individual and group support. Through proactive programs in social-emotional learning, bullying prevention, and conflict resolution, we work to create positive school climates where all students feel they belong.

  • We believe that safety is a shared responsibility. Parents, guardians, and community members are essential partners in this work. We communicate regularly about safety practices and we invite feedback so we can continuously improve. Our close collaboration with the Dunellen Police Department, other emergency services providers, and local health officials ensures that we are prepared for both everyday safety needs and rare emergencies.

  • Safety and security work requires continuous review and reflection. As new challenges arise, we adapt and strengthen our practices. We monitor state and federal guidance, review incident data, and gather input from students, staff, and families to refine our plans. By staying proactive and responsive, we can ensure that our schools remain places of safety, trust, and learning.
