School News and Updates
Class of 2025: The deadline is here! Scholarship packets are due February 22nd for Seniors to fill out in order to potentially receive scholarship money from local organizations. All seniors should take advantage of this opportunity. Review the eligibility criteria carefully to determine which scholarship(s) you are most qualified to pursue. You may apply for more than one scholarship, but it is important that students submit a completed application for the scholarships being sought. Applications are considered complete when all necessary documents, such as letters of recommendation, essays, proof of acceptance, etc., are submitted. For further information, contact Dr. Best, Scholarship Coordinator.

Only 2 weeks until the DHS Drama Club’s production of The Addams Family. The show will run from March 6th - 8th.

Good luck to Senior Maria Stein and Sophomore Samuel Souffrant as they compete in the National Shakespeare Competition on Sunday at the Peddie School. Thank you to our Drama teacher, Mrs. Clemens for making this opportunity possible.

DHS will be holding a school-wide assembly on Tuesday, February 25th. The presenter is David Flood, a motivational speaker that travels the country talking about dignity, respect, and acceptance. Mr. Flood has a son with autism and he will describe the challenges he and his family have experienced, as well as the joy and love that they have shared through the years. It will be a powerful and moving presentation. Mr. Flood last visited Dunellen in 2017.

Congratulations to the DHS Students of the Month for February:
Grade 12 - Antonio Soto
Grade 11 - Abigail Buratti
Grade 10 - Melany Jimenez Arrivillaga
Grade 9 - Isaiah Jackson

Congratulations to Ryan Hutchins, Danny Watts, and Jamael Davis as they were named All-Silver Division for Boys Basketball.

Good luck to the Boys Basketball team as they compete in the first round of the NJSIAA State Basketball Tournament on Wednesday, February 26th at 6 pm at Faber School with a game against Highland Park High School. Come out and support the team. Go Destroyers!!

The Spring Sport season is approaching. Any student interested in participating in baseball, softball, boys tennis, or track & field should make sure they have submitted their paperwork so that they can join a team. If interested, please be sure to see Mr. DeNapoli or Mrs. Buchholz in Room 202 for more information.

Class of 2026: Students in Grade 11 will be taking the New Jersey Graduation Proficiency Assessment (NJGPA) in English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics, March 11 - 14. This is the Graduation test students need to pass in order to be in a position to graduate in 2026. Students need to be sure to charge their Chromebooks, try to get a good night's sleep, and be on time to school!

From the Dunellen PTO: The Dunellen PTO Tricky Tray is scheduled for Saturday, May 3, 2025.  Details for registration and ordering tickets will be provided sometime in February.   We are currently looking for donations to help make our Tricky Tray a successful event.  The more donations we receive, the more prizes we can have at our Tricky Tray, the more money we can raise.  And all money raised goes back to our students, our teachers, and our schools.  For Grades 6 through 12, we are looking to request items related to specific themes for each grade so we can put together some big ticket baskets for our Tricky Tray.  Any help our families can offer is greatly appreciated and helps us do as much as we can for our kids.  Thank you!

Important Reminders
For the Class of 2025: The College Acceptances bulletin board is going up at DHS. We will display the names of students and the colleges that have been accepted to. As the college acceptances start to roll in, please be sure to contact Ms. Markert and the Counseling Office so that they are aware and can add the names and schools for display.

REMINDER: The DHS Homework Help Center runs from 2:45 - 3:45 pm every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday in the DHS Tech Center. Students can come to get extra help from teachers with their school work or just sit and have a quiet place to get things done. We encourage students to attend so that they have fewer or no assignments to do when they get home.

The 2025 Exodus Yearbook is on sale. To purchase a yearbook, use the following link: https://www.jostens.com/apps/store/customer/1057616/Dunellen-High-School/

Academic Corner
Challenging the students academically and establishing productive work habits is always a priority at DHS and that is evident on a daily basis in Mr. Lowenberg’s Understanding Writing class. The students are learning about Carter G. Woodson, the originator of Black History Month, introduced them to ideas of sociology, societal norms, and social constructs, through the lens of close reading, annotating, and research skills. All this in an effort to expose the students to new ideas and build their writing and reading abilities.
