School News and Updates

Congratulations to the winners of last weeks annual DHS Volleyball tournament, from the Class of 2027: Sophie Carranza, Will Ghanim, Patrick McDonald, Matteo Paredes,  Caroline Privado, and Luis Torres Zelaya

Today is World Down Syndrome Awareness Day. Many staff wore “Rock Your Socks” t-shirts that were made by DHS & LMS students, while some wore mismatched socks, a symbol of down syndrome awareness.

Thank you to all of the parents/guardians and students that attended College Planning Night as Ms. Markert delivered a lot of valuable information concerning the courses and activities to take part in in high school, searching for colleges, the application process, and the final step of acceptances and paying for college. Important information as families go through the process.

A group of athletes representing the spring sports teams attended the GMC Sportsmanship Summit. They got a chance to interact with students from other schools and hear from motivational speakers. Thank you to Mr. DeNapoli for accompanying the athletes on the trip.

Class of 2025 - FAFSA reminder
The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is now OPEN. Please use the link for more information on completing the FAFSA.  It is now a Graduation requirement for all NJ high school students to complete the FAFSA during their 12th grade year.

Upcoming Events

A group of over 30 DHS Juniors will be attending a College Fair on Monday, March 24th at Woodbridge HS to meet representatives from colleges and universities from around the country. It’s a good opportunity for students to see what schools have to offer and programs that might interest them.

On Monday, March 31, Engineering students from Rutgers University will be visiting DHS to address questions students may have about how to become an Engineering student, as well as the different types of Engineering. If interested in attending, students should contact Dr. Best.

Class of 2026 and 2028: NJSLA testing will be April 29 and 30 for all students in Grades 11 and 9. 11th graders will be taking the Science exam, while all 9th graders will be taking the ELA exam.

From the Dunellen PTO: The Dunellen PTO Tricky Tray is scheduled for Saturday, May 3, 2025.  Details for registration and ordering tickets will be provided sometime in February.   We are currently looking for donations to help make our Tricky Tray a successful event.  The more donations we receive, the more prizes we can have at our Tricky Tray, the more money we can raise.  And all money raised goes back to our students, our teachers, and our schools.  For Grades 6 through 12, we are looking to request items related to specific themes for each grade so we can put together some big ticket baskets for our Tricky Tray.  Any help our families can offer is greatly appreciated and helps us do as much as we can for our kids.  Thank you!

Important Reminders

Class of 2026, 2027, & 2028: Students in Grades 11, 10, and 9 will begin to meet with their Counselors soon to select courses for the 2025-26 school year. Discussions should be had to determine what classes students would like to take next year, making sure they have the required courses needed to graduate.

All students: A reminder about our ongoing Breakfast program available in the DHS Cafeteria each morning. The breakfast program is a great way to ensure students start the day with a nutritious meal. Students enrolled in the 2024-2025 free/reduced lunch program continue to receive breakfast at no cost.

Class of 2025: DHS has a Senior Practicum program, open to 12th grade students for the last 4 weeks of the school year, where they have a chance to do an internship at a local business or organization that may help them learn more about a potential career. Instead of attending school each day, the students work under the supervision of the adults at their site for 5 hours per day. Any interested 12th grader should speak to Ms. Piano for more information.

For the Class of 2025: The College Acceptances bulletin board is up at DHS. We will display the names of students and the colleges that they have been accepted to. As the college acceptances start to roll in, please be sure to contact Ms. Markert and the Counseling Office so that they are aware and can add the names and schools for display.

REMINDER: The DHS Homework Help Center runs from 2:45 - 3:45 pm every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday in the DHS Tech Center. Students can come to get extra help from teachers with their school work or just sit and have a quiet place to get things done. We encourage students to attend so that they have fewer or no assignments to do when they get home.

World Down Syndrome Awareness Day

Academic Corner

In Mrs. Ayers class, students made the t-shirts that were in support of World Down Syndrome Awareness day and delivered them to staff around DHS & LMS. It was an opportunity to learn a new skill and have fun with their classmates. They were helped by members of the DHS and LMS support professionals, including Mrs. Vakulchik, Mrs. Corrao, Dr. de Oliveira and Ms. Henriques. It was a true team effort!!
