DHS Weekly Update

9/12/25

Main Entrance

Hello Destroyers

Time flies when you are having fun! We are 2 weeks into the new school year, with only 37 left! Students and staff are back into the everyday routine, ready for a challenging and productive year.

Thursday marked the 24th anniversary of September 11th, 2001, Patriot Day and students observed a moment of silence during Homeroom. In History classes, students discussed the importance of the events and remembrance of the lives lost. Never Forget! Thank you again to Mr. Roibal for his moving tribute to those that survived and died that day with the display in the DHS Main hallway outside the Counseling office.

School News and Updates

It's time for Class Elections. If students are interested in being a class officer (President, Vice President, Secretary or Treasurer) now is the time to help the class and run for office.
If students are interested, they should either email or go to see the Grade level adviser.
For Grade 9 - Ms. Powell in the Attendance Office
For Grade 10 - Mrs. Zandomenego in Room 203
For Grade 11 - Mr. Valenzuela in Room 203
For Grade 12 - Mrs. Vakulchik in Room 207
Anyone wanting to run for office, must notify the adviser by the end of the school day on Tuesday, Sept. 16th. Those running will be expected to give a speech before their class on Thursday, September 18th. Elections will be held on Friday, September 19th.

Congratulations to Junior Caitlin Wallace, as she spent a summer filled with new opportunities around the United States. Caitlin participated in the HOBY Youth Leadership program held at Drew University for students from around New Jersey, then attended the national conference in Chicago, Illinois with students from around the country - and world. She also participated in a Youth Leadership Institute, held at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, providing her the opportunity to experience an Ivy League campus and discuss national and international issues.

Congratulations to the Destroyer athletic teams as they started competitions and have added victories to their totals.

The Boys Soccer team is on a 2 game winning streak after beating Highland Park and JFK High Schools this week. They have had strong scoring from multiple players, with exceptional goalkeeping from Andrew Nieves

The Girls Tennis team has won 3 out of their last 4 matches with victories over South River, South Amboy, and Mother Seton. The squad has had strong play all around, but particularly from their Doubles teams of Madison Perdomo and Amina Black, Joselyn Garcia and Peyton Phanor.

The Girls Soccer team is on a 3 game win streak with wins over Carteret, East Brunswick Magnet, and Perth Amboy Magnet. Kaity Garcia leads the team with 7 goals while Rose Ciccolella has been amazing in goal.

Good luck to the Football team as they have their first Home game tonight at 7 pm at Columbia Park against Bound Brook High School. The team is coming off a tough loss last week and hopes to rebound after a solid week of practice and preparation.

Important Reminders

For students eligible for the National Honor Society: Be sure to complete your application by Friday, September 19th. If you have any questions, see Dr. Best.

DHS will soon be offering the Homework Help Center after school, from 2:45 - 3:45 pm, every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday in the DHS Tech Center. Students can come to get extra help from teachers with their school work or just sit and have a quiet place to get things done. We encourage students to attend so that they have fewer or no assignments to do when they get home.

All students: A reminder about our ongoing Breakfast program available in the DHS Cafeteria each morning. The breakfast program is a great way to ensure students start the day with a nutritious meal. Students enrolled in the 2025-2026 free/reduced lunch program continue to receive breakfast at no cost.

In Mrs. McCarthy’s Environmental Science class, students took their learning outdoors. They carefully observed plants around campus, describing them in as much detail as possible. Afterwards, they used Google to match their descriptions with the actual names of the plants—building both scientific observation and research skills.
In Mrs. Clemens’ Drama classes, students engaged in a powerful creative exercise. Using actual footage from September 11th as inspiration, they wrote and performed original scenes. Through this process, students worked to capture the essence of the tragedy while honoring its emotional impact through their art.
