DHS Weekly Update

02/13/2026

Main Entrance

Hello Destroyers

It’s Friday the 13th, but hopefully not a scary day for everyone!

Enjoy the long weekend as schools will be closed on Monday, February 16th in observance of Presidents Day.

It’s Valentine's Day on Saturday, February 14th, time to spend with a special someone and family and friends!

Thank you to the Dunellen PTO for inviting myself (Paul Lynch, DHS Principal) and LMS Principal Cuyler Tobin to their monthly meeting. After the eventful day on Thursday, we were able to have a productive conversation with a group of caring and committed parents. We as administrators were able to share about what occurred and how the school will look to move forward. Instead of entering the proverbial ‘lion’s den’, we were posed thoughtful, considerate questions that we answered to the best of our ability, knowing we will never make everyone happy with our decisions. It gave us a chance to reflect upon several aspects of the event, as we do with any situation that occurs. Instead of dealing with social media posts, emails, and phone calls, we appreciate the chance to talk in person. And most importantly, we always want to be able to brag about the wonderful students of Dunellen High School and the incredible work that they do on a daily basis.

Congratulations to 10th graders, Semarah Mangaroo and Lisbeth Serrano for being selected as the winners of the Dunelen Arts, Inclusion, and Culture Commissions Martin Luther King, Jr. Essay contest.

Thank you to all of the students and community organizations that participated in our annual Wellness Fair. We had organizations representing various sides of physical and mental health, creating great opportunities for our students to learn and interact with health care professionals.

All seniors should take advantage of this opportunity. Applications are due Saturday, February 21st. Review the eligibility criteria carefully to determine which scholarship(s) you are most qualified to pursue. You may apply for more than one scholarship, but it is important that students submit a completed application for the scholarships being sought. Applications are considered complete when all necessary documents, such as letters of recommendation, essays, proof of acceptance, etc., are submitted. For further information, contact Dr. Best, Scholarship Coordinator.

Class of 2026: The College Acceptances bulletin board is going up at DHS. We will display the names of students and the colleges that they have been accepted to. As the college acceptances start to roll in, please be sure to contact Dr. Best and the Counseling Office so that they are aware and can add the names and schools for display.

Thank you to all that participated in the Black History Month Spirit Week. We had high participation from students and staff every day! Thank you to D’Andre Edgar of the Black Student Union for reading about a significant person or event in American history during morning announcements each day.

Congratulations to all of the students that were recognized at the Honor Roll Assembly. Over 150 students earned this award for the 2nd quarter. All of that hard work and studying is appreciated and will pay off in the future.

Calling all theater fans!: Only 3 weeks until the DHS Drama Club’s production of Annie. The show will run from March 5th - 7th.

The Spring Sport season is fast approaching. Any student interested in participating in baseball, softball, boys tennis, or track & field should make sure they have submitted their paperwork so that they can join a team. Important Reminders

The DHS Homework Help Center runs from 2:45 - 3:45 pm every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday in the DHS Tech Center. Students can come to get extra help from teachers with their school work or just sit and have a quiet place to get things done. We encourage students to attend so that they have fewer or no assignments to do when they get home.

This is the Graduation test students need to pass in order to be in a position to graduate in 2027. Students need to be sure to charge their Chromebooks, try to get a good night's sleep, and be on time to school!

Academic Corner: From the caring desk of Ms. Powell

Students in the Leadership 4 Life class took their learning beyond the classroom walls yesterday, spending the morning volunteering at Elijah's Promise in New Brunswick. What began as a service trip quickly turned into a powerful lesson in teamwork, organization, and community impact.

Working side by side in the kitchen, Ms. Powell and students helped prepare 68 full trays of mini meatball pasta, which will be distributed to individuals and families across Middlesex County. From measuring seasonings, mixing ingredients, and assembling trays, every student played an important role in ensuring the meals were prepared with care and efficiency.
In addition to sharpening their collaboration and communication skills, students gained a firsthand understanding of food insecurity and the importance of community partnerships. Staff members at Elijah’s Promise shared insights about their mission, the logistics of serving large populations, and how small acts of service can create meaningful change.

The experience reinforced that leadership is not just about directing others, it is about serving, stepping up when needed, and contributing to something larger than yourself. The staff were so impressed with our students and said we are welcome back any time! We are incredibly proud of our students for representing our school with compassion, professionalism, and a true spirit of service. The students had a fun, rewarding experience and can not wait to return! If you are interested in volunteering or learning more about Elijah's Promise, you can visit their website here
