Main Entrance

Hello Destroyers

Despite the rainy weather coming this weekend, it looks like the spring weather is here to stay and we can FINALLY say goodbye to the cold.

This week we celebrated Administrative Professionals Day for the amazing behind-the-scenes assistants at DHS who keep everything running smoothly every day. Thank you to Mrs. Buchholz, Mrs. Ortiz, Mrs. Ramirez, Mrs. Rios, Ms. Sam-Garni, and Mrs. Switzer for all they do for the students, staff, and families of Dunellen.

A reminder that Wednesday, April 29th is a school day as a result of the snow days this winter. Schools are open on April 29th.

School News and Updates

Class of 2027 and 2029: NJSLA testing will be April 28 and 29 for all students in Grades 11 and 9. 11th graders will be taking the Science exam, while all 9th graders will be taking the ELA exam. Students in Grades 12 and 10 will be able to come into school late on those days. Schedules will be sent out for students to follow.

Announcing the DHS Valedictorian and Salutatorian for the Class of 2026! Congratulations to Joshua Osborne, Valedictorian and Megan North, Salutatorian who have done such an amazing job in their four years at DHS and will be giving speeches at the Graduation ceremony on June 17th.

Congratulations to the Dunellen Youth Advisory Board for Safety, being a part of a state-wide safety conference at Rutgers University. The group was represented by Seniors Autumn Humbert-Williams, Angie Lockhart, and Jackson Portik for their work with the Nikhil Badlani Foundation and received an award for their efforts.

Congratulations to all of the students that were recognized at the Honor Roll Assembly. Over 140 students earned this award for the 3rd quarter. Their hard work and dedication is appreciated and will support their success in high school - and beyond.

The DHS Art Club had an amazing field trip to the newly renovated Princeton University Art Museum. Students were able to experience works of art spanning over 5,000 years from cultures around the globe. Thank you to Mr. Roibal and Mr. Howard for organizing this fantastic experience for the students.

Thank you to Ms. Piano and a group of students for planting flowers around DHS in celebration of Earth Day. Their service helps to beautify our school as we enter the spring and summer months.

Class of 2026: DHS has a Senior Practicum program, open to 12th grade students for the last 4 weeks of the school year, where they have a chance to do an internship at a local business or organization that may help them learn more about a potential career. Instead of attending school each day, the students work under the supervision of the adults at their site for 5 hours per day. Any interested 12th grader should speak to Ms. Piano for more information.

Class of 2026: FAFSA reminder
The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) must be completed by all Seniors. Please use the link for more information on completing the FAFSA.  It is now a Graduation requirement for all NJ high school students to complete the FAFSA during their 12th grade year.

Upcoming Events

Members of the National Honor Society will be taking a field trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 5th, another opportunity for students to experience world-class art throughout the millenia.

The annual Dunellies Award show will be held on Friday, May 8th at 7 pm in the DHS Auditorium. It’s a little bit award show, a little bit talent show, giving our students another opportunity to perform on the stage in front of their peers and a live audience.

The Dunellen PTO Tricky Tray is scheduled for Saturday, May 2, 2026.  The Tricky Tray Committee is currently looking for donations to help make our Tricky Tray a successful event.  The more donations received, the more prizes we can have at our Tricky Tray, the more money the PTO can raise.  And all money raised goes back to our students, our teachers, and our schools.  Attached is a flyer with more information regarding donations.  Any help our families can offer is greatly appreciated and helps us do as much as we can for our kids.  Thank you!
Registration is also open for our Tricky Tray.  It will take place in the John P. Faber Elementary School Gymnasium.  Registration closes on Saturday, April 25, 2026 @ 5pm (or when we have reached capacity).
Here is the link to register and purchase tickets and ticket packages:
Please read the Google Form carefully as there is a lot of information about our Tricky Tray on the main page of the form.
We can't wait to see you on May 2nd for our Tricky Tray!

Important Reminders

For the Class of 2026: The College Acceptances bulletin board is up at DHS. We are displaying the names of students and the colleges that they have been accepted to. As the college acceptances roll in, please be sure to contact Dr. Best and the Counseling Office so that they are aware and can add the names and schools for display.

REMINDER: The DHS Homework Help Center runs from 2:45 - 3:45 pm every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday in the DHS Tech Center. Students can come to get extra help from teachers with their school work or just sit and have a quiet place to get things done. We encourage students to attend so that they have fewer or no assignments to do when they get home.

Academic Corner: From the tireless desk of Ms. Powell

Students in Mr. Tseng’s Algebra 2 classes have been exploring the concept of exponential decay through engaging, real-world applications. Using examples like changes in town populations and the depreciation of car values over time, students are developing a deeper understanding of how mathematical models apply beyond the classroom. Through analysis, discussion, and problem-solving, they are strengthening their ability to interpret and represent exponential relationships in meaningful ways.

In Understanding Writing, Mr. Lowenberg’s students are actively engaging with a New York Times article that explores the importance of skill-building in the age of artificial intelligence. Through close reading and annotation, students are identifying key ideas, analyzing the author’s arguments, and reflecting on how emerging technologies are shaping the skills needed for the future. This work is helping students strengthen their critical thinking and literacy skills while making meaningful connections to the world around them.
