DHS Weekly Update

5/15/2026

Main Entrance

Hello Destroyers

As we move towards the end of another year (only 21 school days remain - but who’s counting!!) we are hoping students remain focused on their academics and finish the school year on a positive note! While there are a lot of fun activities planned for students, we hope they can stay ‘locked in’ and prepare for final exams. THEN comes the summer!!

DHS will be administering NJSLA Math to 9th graders and 10th graders next week, Tuesday, May 19th, during the regular school day, from 7:40 am - 10:30 am. Students should be to school on time with their fully-charged Chromebook.

Students in Grades 11 and 12 have a Late Arrival on May 19th and can arrive at school by 10:30 am. Students will continue the regular day after testing.

Looking ahead: Dunellen schools will be closed for the long Memorial Day weekend, from Friday, May 22nd through Monday, May 25th.

Congratulations to Kyle Denges who will be recognized this weekend as Dunellen’s recipient of the NJSIAA Scholar-Athlete Award. Kyle was a Varsity athlete this fall in Football and in Boys Tennis as the 1st Singles player this spring.

This week a group of students took a field trip to a Somerset Patriots baseball game. Besides a great day at the ball park, students also got an opportunity to participate in their STEM day activities and learn more science in a fun environment.

For the last 2 weeks, DHS students have been participating in Advanced Placement exams in Biology, English Language and Composition, English Literature and Composition, United States History, Calculus AB, Computer Science A, Computer Science Principles, Spanish Language and Culture, and Environmental Science. Congratulations to all of the students that worked so hard this year in the college-level courses and the teachers who prepared them for success. We look forward to receiving the scores in July.

A big thank you to the Dunellen Education Association, the Class of 2026, and Project Graduation for providing a Senior Breakfast to all of the students in the Class of 2026. It was a fun time for the class to spend time together as they approach Graduation Day, June 17th.

Important Reminders

For the Class of 2026: The College Acceptances bulletin board is up at DHS. We are displaying the names of students and the colleges that they have been accepted to. As the college acceptances roll in, please be sure to contact Dr. Best and the Counseling Office so that they are aware and can add the names and schools for display.

REMINDER: The DHS Homework Help Center runs from 2:45 - 3:45 pm every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday in the DHS Tech Center. Students can come to get extra help from teachers with their school work or just sit and have a quiet place to get things done. We encourage students to attend so that they have fewer or no assignments to do when they get home.

Academic Corner: From the desk of Ms. Powell

Mrs. Lancelot’s Modern World History students are currently exploring the connections between World War I and World War II, with a particular focus on the impact of the Great Depression and how global economic struggles influenced historical events. Through class discussions and analysis of historical sources, students are developing a deeper understanding of how events from one era shaped the next. As Mrs. Lancelot prepares for the exciting arrival of her second son, we wish her all the best on her maternity leave and look forward to welcoming her back in the future!

Ms. Fragale’s English I students have been actively engaged in reading William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Throughout the unit, students have explored character development, analyzed the various conflicts within the play, and discussed how these conflicts drive the plot forward. To bring the text to life, students have also participated in acting out scenes in class, helping them better understand the emotions, motivations, and relationships between characters. It has been exciting to see students collaborate, build confidence, and deepen their understanding of this classic work through interactive learning experiences.
