Senior Practicum Experience

This unique program offers eligible seniors an opportunity to conclude their Dunellen High School educational experience by completing an off-campus Senior Practicum. Each Practicum must be approved by the school. In addition, it must be in the form of a non-remunerative service to agencies, businesses, or schools.

Student Selection Process

S.P.E. students will be exempt from final exams, but they must complete all course requirements before the practicum start date. Advanced Placement students will take their exams prior to their practicum.

Students eligible for the S.P.E. must have

  • A cumulative GPA of 2.0 or better.
  • A satisfactory disciplinary record: no out-of-school suspensions.
  • An attendance record showing no more than 10 unexcused absences from school by the start of the Senior Practicum Experience.
  • Student Responsibilities

Students participating in the Senior Practicum Experience must:

  • Work at the S.P.E. site 20 hours per week with a minimum of 2 hours per day.
  • Provide their own transportation to and from the practicum site.
  • Maintain satisfactory attendance at the S.P.E. site with no more than 1 unexcused absence.
  • Maintain a daily journal of senior practicum activities to be submitted to DHS practicum advisors.
  • Attend weekly S.P.E. meetings at the high school.
  • Exhibit an exemplary attitude of cooperation, courtesy, and productivity at the practicum site.
  • Role of the school and employer

Advisors from Dunellen High School will monitor practicum students on a continuous basis through random on-site visits, telephone calls, and student journals.

The Senior Practicum Experience supervisor/host agency will evaluate each student’s performance using an evaluation form provided by the school.
